You've probably noticed that the quality of silk bed linen is defined by the term "momme". momme ". But do you know the meaning of this word and why it's used?

Definition of momme
The momme is a Japanese unit of measurement used to evaluate the density of silk and thus define the quality of the fabric.
- 1 momme = 4.3056 g/m².
- 12 mommes = 51.6672 g/m².
- 16 mommes = 68,8896 g/sqm
- 19 mummes = 81.8064 g/m² (1)
- 22 mummes = 94.7232 g/m² (1)
- 25 mummes = 107.64 g/m² (1)
So, a 19 mommes silk contains around 20% more silk than a 16 mommes, and there's 16% more silk in a 22 mommes than in a 19 mommes.
Silk quality
Generally, to determine the quality of a fabric, such as cotton, we look at the number of threads used. In the case of silk, this criterion is not sufficient. In fact, two silk fabrics can have the same thread count without being of the same quality. Furthermore, as silk yarns are extremely fine, the number of threads used would be far too high, and could mislead the consumer.
So, to measure the quality of silk, we use the momme, which is much more precise, as it determines the quantity of silk present in a square meter of fabric.
Momme and characteristics of silk bed linen
The higher the momme, the higher the price of the material, because in concrete terms this translates into :
- Softer, more luxurious silk
- Stronger, more durable silk
- A silk compatible with intensive use
- A more opaque silk
Which momme for which use?
Depending on the final product, different qualities of silk will be chosen for the garment:
- Less than 12 mommes: accessories, scarves and light silk garments
- From 12 to 16 mommes: Silk pyjamas
- From 19 mommes: Silk pajamas and bed linen
